Why is this such an interest?

Can someone please explain to me why Anime is so damn popular and such a big thing to many people? To many, Anime is a hobby, an interest, and a stereotype, well it is not, Anime is a style of ART that Japanese use for TV shows and other forms of entertainment.

So why do people consider themselves "Anime Fans"? Thats like saying I am an "Abstract Fan."

My dad, a scientist, says that he was involved with a study on "Anime Fans" and his team concluded Anime fans have lower than normal IQ's

a= well obviously because people enjoy it, everyone has their own taste/opinions....but probably because there are series where you just can't wait until the next episode(like prison break, lost etc.)

japan is one of the smartest countries in the world when it comes to technology, and they're a small country as well, i think your dad needs to do more research(lol there's flaws in this but i don't care)

yeah, but they're not like anime fans. a lot of anime fans are like this:
if its an anime from japan, they like it, no matter how boring i think it is. i'm not saying they should think like me but most of the time it seems that they just like it because its from japan. you understand what i'm trying to say?
second, for some reason, anime fans get offended when you compare cartoons from here to cartoons from japan and they insist that its not a cartoon, that its anime.
people like the simpsons, but they not considering cartoon fans and looking for every cartoon possible.

oh yeah i can see what you mean now.......hmm my brother searches for new anime all the time, i guess it's just the style/genre, say someone enjoys metal music, when they walk into HMV they're going to go to the metal section and see if there are any new metal albums etc.

that's the way i see it.....i guess it's just because they have free time, i'm not saying that all anime are the same, however again, usually the same style/genre

To answer your question -
Because theres sod all on TV apart from repeats and Unreality tv
Because they have better plots than most things on tv (appart from ones in the Dragonball, Naruto mold)
Because most are funnier than anything the US has put out (not the UK we have monty python and funny people)
Because most of the disney stuff out (animated wise) is just the same thing where as if you put it next to the stuff out by Studio ghibli well considerin he has not made a naff film where as disney (alladin 3 any one ?)

So your sayin that scientists have nothin better to do with there time

No I dont live in my mums basement (she dosnt have one)
No I dont collect the vast amount of crap that comes out with every anime/manga



Also put into perspective the resident consoles from each country
US - Xbox basically the same as every other games console ever made
Jap - Wii, DS, PS3 Whoa something different(ok maybe not that last one)
UK - Dragon 32 oh wait that was Wales

Remember if every body thought the same the world would be dull

i have been a huge fam of japan since i was little. and recently got into anime in the last.. what.. mabye 3-4 years ago?


not everyone in japan is into anime, some peopel i know actually hate it.

but like DP said. there is SFA on t.v these days, besides reality like the biggest loser, are you smarter than a 5th grader ( seriously.. WTF were they thinking!). thee isnt a whole lot else to watch. not to mention anime has a better plot than most t.v shows.

I'm a fan of rap music, thats an art form. Now I dont like all rap, just as im sure not all anime fans like all anime.

Its a genre of art. There are people who are abstract fans. Which are people who mainly like abstract art. And there are realists, etc, etc, etc.

People like it just like they like any other kind of art form. What dont you get?

That's why I don't like scientific experiments like that, they'll never be 100% correct with it. Clearly your father and his team, only examined/studied a handful of Anime fans, and with several tests they come to a conclusion with several of the subjects sharing the same results. Thus they automatically assume that every other "Anime Fan" is generally stupid, just like the handful they picked up. I myself enjoy Anime, and I'm already showing more intelligence than your Father & his team of scientists on this subject.

My advice: Go back to the drawing board, and try to have a more open mind with tests like that.

Same reason one person likes Beer and a different person likes Wine.. They're both generally alcohol (to an extent for wine), but have different flavors & aftertastes. There are Beer fans out there as there are Wine fans, even though they're both just alcoholic beverages.

It's called having preferences, if someone enjoys something.. they'll usually stick with it, and eventually identify themselves as being a "fan" of it (if they so choose to).

Cartoons are Animated Shorts/Comic Strips, typically being comedic, like Garfield comic strips, or Looney Tunes.

Anime is an Eastern art style.

I don't know how someone can easily mix up the word Cartoons with general Animation., that's pretty dumb.

Ahahah, people are influenced by TV when they were younger, and most anime fans spawned off in the 90's for one reason:

That's what got me into it.

Personally, I think it's just an art form that's naturally branched off from manga. So, it's usually the storyline that people usually go for, even though a lot of people go for cute characters and whatnot, but I do that sometimes. D:

I draw manga so I have an interest in the way the characters move and look, they're far more detailed than just your normal cartoon. Plus, people watch it of all ages, not just kids, because I love the dry and sarcastic humour some of them have, but look at things like Death Note as well. There's variation in the style and I like adapting my own to it.

I don't want to go to extremes with hentai and the works, that is just euhhh by my concerns.

I don't care for anime much, either.

Perhaps it's the social classification that comes along with it. When I was in high school, all the anime fans enrolled in Japanese class, wore obscure anime outfits/accessories, brought portable DVD players to lunch so they could all embrace anime, devoted every single school project to it... I don't know why anime fans find it necessary to have to incorporate EVERY SINGLE DIMENSION OF THEIR LIFE to anime. Everyone has a hobby, but THIS one seems to take the cake for the most irritating/cult-like following. Maybe it was just my school.

I'm not saying all anime fans are like this either, some of my friends are...and they keep it under wraps, I respect that.

But. Seriously.
