Katakana is meant for non-Japanese words, remember? Like how you write 'Cowboy Bebop', not 'Kaubôi Bibappu'.

And the official title is indeed Life, as proved by the manga translation: http://myanimelist.net/manga/407/Life

I've never seen it (or any other J-dramas). I just did a quick Google search out of curiosity.
