Also, we see the smoke again. Hooray. Now what the hell is it.

Oooh, we see the smoke monster again? See, I stopped watching Lost sort of, because I was just bored with all the unexplained changes, and how they abandoned all the old plot lines that were so cool (particularly way back in first season). I'm glad to hear the smoke monster's returned - that was one big "WTF???" moment when we first saw it. I may have to start watching again...

Which abandoned plotlines do you mean?
Oftentimes plot elements are set up WAY before they have a payoff, so it's possible you missed the resolution of some of those things, especially if you stopped watching.
And season 3 had some very key scenes as to what the smoke monster can do.

I realize I may have missed a lot of these, if they've cropped up in the last season, but:
the polar bear
the smoke monster (though this is back, yay!)
the weird machine that pulled Locke underground
the sound of stomping feet that we heard very early on (though this may be related to the smoke monster?)
I know I'm missing a lot, but I've sort of grown a little fuzzy on the details of this show over the past year. It's not that I'm saying I don't like it, just that I wish they would at least reference these things now and again to keep them "live." I'm all for the long haul, and investing over a long stretch to wait for a payoff down the road, but most of the things I found so cool about the first season seem to have been left by the wayside.

There may be spoilers here for you since you've missed some things.

The bears were part of the Dharma research project. Sawyer and Kate were locked in the old bear cages in the early part of season 3. This season, we learned that a polar bear skeleton with a Dharma collar was unearthed in the desert in Tunisia. Moo ha haaa...

All three of these things are the smoke monster. We don't have all the answers to what it is or where it cam from (yet), but little bits and pieces have trickled out. We learned that the smoke monster apparently has the ability to scan your mind in some way and also take the shape of things. The Others have a sonic fence around their village that it cannot pass, but we also just learned that Ben was somehow able to summon it although he may not really have full control over it.
We've also recently learned that the time on the island doesn't quite match up with the outside world. It's not that it's in the future or in the past but somehow just not quite in sync.

Granted, a lot has changed since the start (I doubt anyone who was watching the first few episodes could have predicted in a million years what's going on now), but ultimately all those little things have been pushing things along and do get more or less answered as things more forward. Although each question that's answered typically brings up two new questions!

Guess we know know how Kate gets Claires baby...
Can anyone explain to me how and why Sawyer became a nice guy? Not that I don't like it but I enjoyed the comedy Sawyer would bring to the show. Now he is the protector and the guy looking out for them all... which is just odd...

We are being shown that Sawyer can have respect for women. In my opinion, it seems as though they're replacing the old Sawyer with Miles. The similarities are undeniable.

Some of them. Miles doesn't have the charm that Sawyer has/d, try to imagine Miles trying to hook up with Kate... Or Juliette.
It seems Sawyer has lost his sex appeal when he got his chivalry.

^I thought you were specifically speaking of comedy...?

Sigh. Why can't they ever leave the bad boy alone? I miss old Sawyer, though he's still about a million times hotter than Miles.
Thanks so much, Skippy, for all of that -- I think I might have to start watching regularly again! I'll keep you in mind for questions when I'm totally lost. No pun intended.
