one controller behaving badly - con you test ?

Hi,
got a Wii for my son at Xmas, works well, but a second controller purchased together with Wii Play behave badly, It moves but some of the movements are not registered, i.e. backswing in golf, boxing (nunchuck works) no right hand, in Wii Play, iy not possible in the fishing game to yank and in the cowriding the cow jumps uncontrolably.

So my question is: is there a way to run a diagnostics on the controller ?
