Wiimote not working

Hello,
This is my first post on this and indeed any other forum, so I am quite excited! We got a a Nintendo Wii for Christmas and it has been brilliant but today when we set our second controller to play Wii Sports it wasn't working properly, it moved the cursor on the screen but wouldn't pick up any movement ie on Tennis, Golf, Bowling. I reconnected, put new batteries in and tried again, same result. I then tried another game and same again. Can anyone help PLEASE???!???????!????????
