1024 by 768 is the amount of pixels from left to right and top to bottom on a screen.

The first is a computer resolution called XGA while the second is an interlaced resolution used by standard NTSC TVs with a 4:3 ratio with about 700 horizontal pixels. The third is commonly called progressive scan and is most commonly output by DVD players and newer game consoles (including the PS2 for example) which is also 4:3 ratio. The third is an HDTV resolution which is actually 1280x720 and is a 16:9 ratio image.
