    NTFS corrupt..

Basically, I'm having the Blue screen of death. I've managed to get my computer on for a short while, I've done a system restore...yet everytime I get a non-responsive programme, I get the BSOD. I don't know if the problem is causing the non-responsive programmes, or vice versa.

It did tell me on one the the BSODs that DRIVERS/NTFS was corrupt or missing. It's definately not missing, so I can assume that it's corrupt.

Now, I;m not stupid with computers, I know a fair bit, so no need to talk to me like i'm a complete thick arse

I was wondering, is there a way of fixing this, without completely reinstalling win xp? (I don't use vista because of all my things which won't work with it)

Please, no answers like 'get a mac' I'm really not interested in buying a macintosh.

    I'd appreciate some help.

    Thankyou in advance.

    Enoch was right.

Im not sure if this will be of any help, but i had a corupt NFTS drive so i re installed XP, but i was able to retrieve all the files i had on it using a program called kernel system restore, and i got all the things that i had on the computer before on it again. Im not sure if there is a way to fix the corruptness without reinstalling XP, but dont count on my words

A: It rarely happens that MFT becomes corrupted. NTFS stores a copy of MFT that is called MFT mirror. If problem occurs, NTFS tries to synchronize these copies.

You can try to run Check Disk utility from Windows environment. Or if Windows is not bootable, boot from floppies or bootable CD-ROM to Recovery Console and run CHKDSK utility that could help you.

    try that

    EDIT: also try this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555531

Thankyou, I'm trying that link currently.

EDIT: I'll use the information on that link as a last resort..mainly because I don't know where my xp disc is >.<

Do you know whether it has to be the same XO disc as I used when I first installed XP?

You're going to need an XP disk,

put it in and bring up the recovery console then select your windows installation

    type in

    fixmbr C:
    [enter]
    fixboot C:
    [enter]
    fixmbr C:
    [enter]

and follow the instructions after each command.

If that fails then either your drive is genuinely toast, or you need to reconstruct your NTLDR files.

google fix NTLDR for the ISO file you'll need to do this.

you definitely want to use the windows options first, as outlined above.

I had a corrupt NTFS that wouldn't give, so I used KNOPPIX, a linux live CD with NTFS-3g support. It's risky to try and access a ntfs partition with unofficial (hacked) drivers, but if all else fails it could allow you to copy your files to an external drive so you don't lose important stuff in the reinstall. For me it was a lifesaver.

    Google knoppix.
