According to what the pokemon community here has said, the main reason to play Pokemon is competitiveness.

Only if one is a competitive gamer. Otherwise, playin' the game is all 'bout the community itself and quite obviously, the Pokamens.

A Pokémon MMORPG that's actually licensed by Nintendo is something that I've always wanted. It would include every region from old installments and new, but I would mostly hang in Kanto and Johto. See? I have dreams too! :3

Few years back, we had a thread discussing in-depth of how a Pokemon MMO could work. Demand for said MMO is quite high, let me tell ya. I'd love t' see one as well, though I know it sure as shit won't happen. Mature, A-class work'a art Pokemon games would probably come 'fore an MMO.
