I thought that mod-chips were legal as long as you weren't playing illegal games on it.

Well, glad I didn't mod and I feel sorry for the people who bought the mods. But maybe the mod developers will update the console with updates that override the Nintendo updates?

Mod chips are not inherently evil. For example you are legally aloud to make one copy for a CD that you own for back-up purposes. I personally do this myself since you can never be too careful. Creating a system that disallows any form of backing up the program is quite annoying, when people discover ways of doing this by circumventing the system it can indeed be used for piracy but it can also be used for safety's sake.

Or sometimes people mod their consoles in order to be able to play games that are region locked. While in some cases this could be considered illegal it isn't necessarily wrong. You can buy games that are not out in your area and pay to have them imported. You should not also be forced to buy an entirely new console.

Or even homebrew. That is a feature many people enjoy but when a console does not officially support it there isn't much you can do. Homebrew isn't wrong it is just someone being creative.

While there are illegal uses for the chip there are also perfectly legal and proper ways to use the chip aswell. Classifying the chip as inherently evil is like labeling all nuclear power as evil. Sure it can hurt many people and do horrible things but it also has the potential for great good.

i find it funny when they say its illigal. they are just saying that to scare people from buying them. they are 100% legal if they are sold without any sort of software on them. for example, the xbox1 modchips ive bought never came with anything on them (well the Xenium did but that was the chips OS that did not "hack" the xbox at all). you had to download the files and flash the chip yourself . im assuming its the same way with these chips. if they were illegal than the site that sell them would be shut down (the ones that dont sell out of china that is)

anything that you do that cracks open the case and/or interferes with the hardware from its original design completely negates any and all warranties.

but you're right. the chips themselves aren't illegal, but they're rarely used for legal purposes.

Nintendo can't do anything about modchips. The location that they are installed to can't be affected by new firmware. Although Nintendo could have a trick up there sleeve, thats why the WiiKey's PROM can be updated via DVD setup disc. I guess only time will tell if I am correct or everyone else on this thread is. In the mean time I can play every NES, SNES, SEGA, Turbo Graphics game off one disc!

A mate had a modded Xbox that was just like a pc (?) the Saturns speeded everything up and put UK games at full screen

    Bad
    - Waranty gone
Meh Nintendo arnt like Sony there consoles last
    - Copys/bootlegs
As a collector I hate these things as they arnt worth anything

lol whoopy, ye offcourse they're aware. They won't do anything about it though. Why not? I hear you ask..

Well first of all, it boosts their sales ( and yes, they DO make profit on every console sold)

2nd, if they come up with something new, that will be hacked within weeks
