but only in japan for now...or could this maybe be one of the secrets
October 31, 2006 - When Nintendo spilled the beans on its launch plans for the upcoming Wii, gamers were disappointed to learn that DVD playback had been removed from the console's feature set. The decision to leave it out was apparently made in order to keep the machine's price down and because Nintendo felt most people already owned DVD players. But according to GamesIndustry.biz, the company has different plans for its homeland.
A spokesperson for Nintendo has revealed that an "enhanced" version of the Wii with DVD playback is due in Japan next year. Before everyone else gets their hopes up, the same spokesperson also stated that there are currently no plans to release the enhanced Wii in the U.S. or Europe.
Nintendo is not revealing exactly when the Wii will be enhanced for Japan, or how much the upgraded version will cost. It is likely there will be other bells and whistles added, but Nintendo is currently focusing on the initial launch.
