Wii console won't see discs

brand new wii console, just out of the box. all functions work except - the
discs are not seen when on the wii menu. I tried replacing the cables, the
CR2032 battery that's inside...Not working. We replaced our old console with
this new one - because...the old one wouldn't see discs anymore. Is there something
we are doing, or are both consoles coincidentally broken with the same issue?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

PS: we've tried flipping the discs over, etc.

Check the discs. If they are damaged (scratches, scuffs) hey might not work
