Game consoles have matured since the NES and SNES, and the games have changed. The video game changed for ever in 1992/93 when Wolf 3D was released ; a new era of gaming had started.Originally Posted by hotpotato78
Times have changed. "Kiddie" is now an issue whether you like it or not. Like I said before, for Wii to compete with PS3 and XBox in the long term, its going to have to lose this image:
- adults won't buy the Wii if all there are is kiddy games such as barnyard and endless Mario games
- 3rd party developers won't develop more mature games for the Wii if adults aren't buying the console , and that will mean less games.
- Without enough 3rd party games, Wii will be yet another GC - i.e., a failure. How many failures can Nintendo handle before it gets out of the console hardware market.
Its a spiral that Nintendo has to get out of.
No console can ride upon 1st party games, alone. It needs 3rd party backing.
I'll reiterate: The Wii must be compelling to the range of gamers, casual, hardcore and kids.
If Nintendo has to rely on its own games Wii is doomed, and failed yet again.
As a rough sample, on these forums, how many people are saying they want more mature games? This is a fairly good indicator, and it shows that the Wii has a problem in this regard.
You, yourself may not like the word 'kiddie' and 'Wii' in the same sentence, but its reality, and its a problem.
