Don't worry, games like Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 will always have a significant amount of online gamers for a long time. Especially because it is one of the few great online games for the Wii.

Is there a network that you have to pay a monthly fee for?

No, the Wii's Wi-Fi connection is free. Don't be confused with XBox Live where you have to pay for the online services. I still prefer XBox Live despite the price. Nintendo's online play has not been the best.
