To be fair, I think this April Fools prank was probably known by everyone to be just that. Basing an entire discussion point and perspective on it seems a little off.

I remember playing the original Mortal Kombat when I was around 8 or 9. I didn't think it was particularly 'mature'. I did like the fact that it was using realistic sprites, rather than Street Fighters cartoon-esque characters, and I always loved the idea of a finishing move, a special treat for those skilled enough to find out and then pull off a move that would literally destroy your opponent.

I don't think it's about the blood and gore, I think it's the reasons why there is blood and gore in a game that is important. Mortal Kombat fits because it is meant to be a virtual fight to the death. Madworld fits because it's meant to be about a kill or be killed game show (which admittedly isn't exactly original, however the level of creativity to use your surrounding area to accomplish your spree is original).

In short, it's never about the blood. The blood is just a tool to create a desperate situation in which a player must be lethal or risk being killed themselves.

I'd be bothered if that blood was to be implemented into the game. I'd want it removed.

While this lame video might have most of you screaming, "TehL33TZ H@RdCoR3!!!!!!!!!!1" I think this is not only disgusting but the amount of blood is so exaggerated it kills the art of the game all together.
Sadly many gamers thought this video was "sweet". Which makes me question how much I actually relate to this "hardcore" community....
If you're trying to prove to us why you don't consider yourself hardcore, this wasn't a very good way to do it. If you had an understanding of what "art" is in videogames, then you would simply accept that games were meant to go in certain art directions, and those with more hardcore directions are for gamers with different preferences. Putting blood in Smash is obviously offputting because it's not Smash's direction of presentation, not because you don't like hardcore. The video was supposed to kill game's integrity. The (April Fools') joke is in its irony.

Yet most "hardcore" gamers would probably put Madworld over Metroid Prime 3 on the "hardcore" scale just because of the amount of blood and gore in the game. Nothing against Madworld, I'm sure its a very good game, but in the end it looks like a lot of mindless waggling and blood splatter. We need to truely redefine what hardcore is, cause it sure isn't bucket loads of blood splattering everywhere.
It does hold some truth to it. It pokes fun at the absurd mindset of most hardcore types who attract themselves to games with loaded blood and gore (Case in point: Several gamers have been complaining that the upcoming Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 has reduced its blood content). It doesn't at all define the behavior of all hardcores, but it definitely applies to many of them.

Buckets 'o blood appeal is what we call a stereotype of the hardcore community. And stereotypes always hold an ounce of truth.

Can I just say, that Conker's Bad Fur Day was awesome. The art direction was more cartoonish, but the humour was adult and there was blood.

I would say that it's not a case of art styles, its a case of the intended audience/s. The reason a bloody smash bros wouldn't work is because of the characters and intended audience (i.e. playable for everyone). That and the fact that none of the other Nintendo based characters really have too much blood in them anyway (and they can all perish), and so they don't really keep in with the characters themselves.

Now if Nintendo used a completely new bunch of characters and made them to have bloody fisticuffs, I can imagine that being actually quite good. I can also imagine there would be less voices of opposition (although I think most people took the video for what it is: a humorous April Fool's prank).

<<A gamer thats sick of all this "Hardcore" game shite
Instead of worrying if a game is hardcore or not just play it and enjoy it after all who would want to play a game they hate? (ok game.com games aside)
Treasure have been known to make games that have fallen into the "Hardcore" section and yet theres no blood in them and there cartoony and for the most part really good fun to play (The level three boss in Gunstar heros is possibly the best ever)
Then on the ofter hand theres Wii sports
Every body that has a Wii has or has had a copy of it
Its not "hardcore" but its "fun" (ok its better with freinds) and thats all that counts really

The only time when I like the word "hardcore" being used is when its to do with porn

I know it was a joke, that's not the point of this thread.

Nice. I can't even walk into a damn gamestop and shop freely anymore without some idiot pointing out that this and this game is rated E so its not hardcore, and that I should buy this game cause "It has tons of blood bro! Plus ITS RATED M TOO!!!"
In 2007 I predicted Wii Fit would sell more than Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

EVERYONE at wiichat.com disagreed with me.

    As it stands today:

Super Smash Bros. Brawl: 9.49 Million

    Wii Fit: 35 Million

I have my music on so I cant hear them

Best way to talk to them is say "Dose that make Thrill kill/Katsumi Ninja one of the most hardcore games ever then?"
Then say "im not your bro" (Even tho its mostly the word "mate" over ere)

Blood and a "18/M" thing on the box never makes it good

Blood, gore, and violence, doesn't make a game "hardcore". Now if a game requires a lot of skills, then I'd say you can classify it as "hardcore." For example, if you think about MadWorld on the Wii, the game can be characterized as "hardcore" not for its violence and bloodshed, but the rigor and challenge that is involved in the game itself.

SSBB is as close to casual as a fighting has ever gotten. And hardcore games aren't games with blood in them, they're games with challenge and progressive artistry in them.
