    Super Meat Boy Development Update

A little information update on Team Meat's upcoming WiiWare title.

Well I just got a sneak peek at the brand new Super Meat Boy trailer that the guys at Team Meat will be showing at the upcoming Nintendo Media Summit in London and I have to say, the game is looking absolutely amazing! Not only are there quite a few little retro gaming surprises in store, but the intensity of the game is astounding. You'd better bring your "A" game for this one.

Screenshots just don't do the game justice, as it looks fantastic in motion. The water color look of the visuals gives the game such a unique look and feel. The music is also top notch, with an intro musical track that classic fighting game fans will immediately recognize. And if you thought the music in the original Flash release was good, wait until you get a load of some of the rocking tracks in this WiiWare release.
    That wasn't very nice!

    That wasn't very nice!

It's clear that the game is turning into everything fans of Meat Boy were hoping for and this is shaping up to be one of the best WiiWare titles to date. While we can't show you the trailer just yet, I was able to speak to Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes of Team Meat, and they answered a few questions that popped into my head while watching the Super Meat Boy trailer. They also mentioned that Bandaid Girl's name was changed to Bandage Girl due to legal concerns. To find out what else they had to say on the subject of Super Meat Boy, read on.

Nintendo Life: Can we expect quite a few retro game references, be them graphically or musically, throughout the game?

Edmund: Yeah, Super Meat Boy is one HUGE homage to all the best of retro gaming. Its a walking video game cliche, we are totally getting sued.

NL: I noticed that the gameplay in the game is very fast-paced, even more so than found in the original flash game. Was there a conscious effort to maybe make the game a bit more up tempo and intense?

Tommy: Well, that's a trailer..so we had to cram as much into it as possible...if it was really that fast we would have to be on meth to keep up.

Was that a slide move I saw in there and can we expect any other new gameplay moves for Meat Boy in this WiiWare release?

Tommy: There is no slide, but the controls give you a much more broad range of movement than the Flash version.

Edmund: Yeah what you probably saw in the trailer was the "Super Run" where you now hold 1 to run really fast and jump further. As Tommy mentions there are a lot of very small details to the controls that add a lot of depth for more experienced players that play of momentum and button combinations..

One extra we don't show in the trailer is the alt abilities of unlockable characters, not only will each character have different, speed, weight and jump, but most will also have alternate abilities that Meat Boy doesn't have.. for example Commander Video has a double jump ability.

NL: I know you said previously that the flash medium was fairly restrictive as far as what you could do with a game. How has it been being able to enjoy so much more freedom using the Wii console's capabilities?

Tommy: Its nice to be able to do stuff like dynamic lighting, and replays, and still have it running at a cool 60fps. Flash sucks.
