Acts of violence, reckless driving, poor health - the list goes on. These things have long been blamed on video games, prompting restriction, censorship, and even prohibition. Gamers are so tired of the finger-pointing and banhammering. Capcom
, having been involved in the latest controversy, has gotten sick of the witch hunt, and so they speak the words that gamers would echo the world over: You cannot blame societyís ills on video games.
The latest anti-game rap came from Bishop Bryant of Jarrow, Archdeacon Brian Smith and Rt Rev John Goddard, attacking Capcom's Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles
. ďIf we dabble in this area we open ourselves to influences and put ourselves at risk. I would regard any encouragement for children to be drawn into this behavior with extreme horror," they said.
Capcom's Leo Tan stepped forward, launching a verbal counterattack against the religious leaders:
Most games (and movies) like Resident Evil show characters fighting evil not supporting it. Unfortunately the clergy is showing a lack of understanding of the video games industry and is too quick to splash the holy water and lump video games players into stereotypical boxes.
This is scaremongering and typical religious hysteria. You cannot blame societyís ills on video games. Itís just absurd.
