Farcry Saving question.

does farcry auto-save? i played through a little chunk of it and i thought it was auto-saving along the way. i shut it off and returned later to find myself starting and the beginning of the game again. is there something i have to do to save in this game? is there a special way to load from where you were?

for the record, the game is ok. out of Farcry, COD3, and Red Steel i prefer Red Steel for fun and difficulty.
