DHCP is the way that computers ask for an address when they connect. That is why you weren't able to connect when your friend only had it set to allow three people.

Thibor is a new "operating system" for your router that will improve its reliability and add features. http://www.thibor.co.uk/

I can't answer the third question yet.

If it helps any I have the exact same router as you

    ciper,

there really must be a radical cultural difference between the USA and UK.

as for "free" internet, there are various "wireless hotspots" popping up all
over the country. these are networks available for pretty much "anyone"
to use...as long as they're provided with a network key.

as for my situation, why the hell would i want some freeloader using my
internet connection that i pay 18 a month for? thats just plain dumb.

    it's akin to:-

    1. here's my car, use it and all of its petrol and don't bother filling it back up, i don't mind.
    2. here's and extension lead, plug all of your tv's / microwaves etc into, don't worry, i'll foot the bill.

yes i agree that "governments" and ISP's should strive to provide us with
free internet, just as tv ought to be free (especially as the channels we receive are shite), but i certainly draw the line under people abusing my
    worked and paid for facilities.
