    wireless help

OK so I'm not very smart when it comes to computers but my room mate is. We had ours set up for wireless and it was working fine. Problem was that other people were getting on our network and we weren't able to access internet on our computers. So he turned his security back on and now when it asks for the pasword we put it in and it says canot connect. Is there something special you have to do to conect wirelessly using a secure network?? b/c we have changed the pasword a couple of times and it still doesn't work?/!

your mate can't be that smart if he allows an unsecured network to operate.

    right, onto your problem.

    1. are you entering the correct password / passkey?
    2. does the wireless network use MAC filtering?

personally, rather than try and bodge a bad job, i would reset the router
(i assume you're using a router?)and start again, from scratch.
it would be best (when making changes) to connect to the router with
ethernet cable as MAC filtering etc. won't affect connectivity.

also, wherever possible, use WPA encryption rather than the less secure
    WEP encryption.

I intentionally leave my wireless open....

According to this so do most people http://wefi.com/
Its a replacement for the wireless client in windows which will look at all the closest open access points and find the best for your connection. It then connects back to the service and updates the map with the newly found access point creating a completely documented open wireless network map!

Nymisus: What type of security did you enable and are you able to connect other computers to it without problem?

ok well when we first started the security was on and it couldn't connect so we turned it it. Worked fine and then last night I wasn't able to get online on my computer b/c someone else was using our shit(he had set it to only 3 users) so he turned the security back on and it won't work again. Yes he has changed the password twice and still wont work...its a linksys wrt54g ver4......I have heard that entering the mac address of my wii into the router will work ( I have not idea how to do this so I haven't tried have to wait for him to get home I guess) is that true??

You could setup DHCP reservations and mac filtering and turn the security back off. That would prevent the majority of users from connecting.

Tell your friend to dump the Linksys firmware and install Thibor!

that's seriously worrying. what about the undesirables who download
illegal stuff? i'd have thought that anyone intentionally offering "free"
connections would be punished along with the offender?

as for leaving your network open intentionally, why do you do that?
do you rely on other forms of authentication? MAC filtering, Log-ons etc?

here in the UK there have been recent events whereby people have been
caught using other peoples wireless networks, and although no prosecution
took place (i don't think a law had been passed for it at the time) it was
seriously frowned upon. it's the wifi equivalent of having an electrical outlet
on the side of your house saying "here, free electric, come and abuse me".

No in fact there is (slow moving) work to make every city in the Bay Area (san francisco through san jose) to have free wireless EVERYWHERE free of charge!

What do you mean? No other security on the wireless is enabled. Its wide open on 802.11A and 802.11G. I'm going to also setup a FON AP which will allow others to connect

Then in this case I feel obligated to insult the UK. Why shouldn't the internet be free for everyone? Our two cultures are REALLY different in this case.

Because people here are just like that lol if we pay for our internet why should someone get to come along and use it for free? Though I don't see why you'd feel "obligated to insult the UK" just because the culture is different

I insult the UK for being backwards in this regard. Can you explain why every city in the area is going to install free wireless internet?

The internet isn't just a toy or entertainment. It would be as if you told me "In the UK we are charged a conversation tax and we don't want just anyone walking around talking to each other"
But i guess it makes sense considering you also have Television permits
