UK US Compatibility

Hi there .Got a nintendo wii from America and have tried to set it up here in London for my two {highly expectant} little boys.I got what I thought was the proper plug adaptor 500--1600 watts but when I plugged in the wii adaptor it blew a la the nineteen seventies.The pop came from the wii adaptor not the plug.Have I buggered up the whole system or just the wii adaptor.Do i need to change the actual plug adaptor.Hope you can help....... and can i get the American for the wii here in the uk.......
