So Carmageddon has officially been announced to have been "reacquired" by Stainless from Square Enix. This homecoming could only mean one thing: Carmageddon is definitely coming back from the dead.

Stainless is describing the new iteration of the franchise to be in its "early development". They also confirmed that it will be coming out as a digital download, although they have yet to confirm for which platforms it will be coming to.

Said co-founder and CEO of Stainless, Patrick Buckland, "Carmageddon has returned to its Indie developer roots, and the time is right to bring the game to a new audience. Originally an ambitious title that tested the hardware limits of its day, we're excited that the game will finally get the showcase it deserves on today's platforms."

Added co-founder Neil Barnden, "Carmageddon: Reincarnation will feature the same black humour and comic violence that made the original game such a success. All the laughs, the crazy power-ups, and extreme destruction wll return. We will make sure the existing fans get what they want and expet from a Carmageddon game, and a new generation discovers the delights of sliding into a Cunning Stunt."

A couple of weeks back, a mysterious countdown timer over at the Carmageddon site got people alerted that a new announcement for the franchise may be coming soon, and it sure did.
This is also coming out for the wiiware service as well.
