Exactly. That's become the cry of the uninformed who rage against the machine. Most of the "Mom and Pop" arguments are not based on econometric analysis, they lump other major retail chains in with small business, they don't look at creative destruction and recycling.

Although it looks like they are probably just closing out an old model. That particular HD-DVD player only goes to 1080i. Newer models do 1080p. But it's still a good deal if you can grab one.

Goddam, I stand corrected (plus I see all those articles I found were like from Aug/Sep) - that is amazing! It's an A2, which isn't a bad player either (decent entry/low-mid). I see from the fine print it's geographically limited/store based, but pretty amazing no doubt (I guess ri-walmart.com is the B&M based site).

I called my Circuit City store to see if they'd price match the $99 Best Buy deal. They will and they match 110%. They are selling it to me for $90. However, they will not match the 2 free Instant DVDs that Best Buy has. The nearest Best Buy to me is an hour away, so I'll go with this deal.

And from Best Boob, holy hell:

HD-A2, 2 free instant HD-DVD's, 5 more by mail..... $96.96 out the door!!!

Maybe I will score one of these, even if it eventually migrates upstairs. It's almost "disposable" at this price.

Im telling you guys, this means the end of the PS3. They just won't be able to get out the good games in time. And it's not like they can remove the Blu-Ray player, all the games are on Blu-Ray!

It's probably a no name player. The true nail would have to be the price of the discs. To this day I have yet to pick up Casino Royale because it's way too expensive at US$25. Yeah it's HD, but the extras are still in standard def. If people see low prices and group specials on movies, they are more likely to pick them up. Since neither BluRay nor HDDVD have acceptable prices at this point in time, it will boil down to player price, titles and availibility.

It's a Toshiba HD-A2, which has kind of become the low/mid market standard for HD-DVD players. Supposed to have really outstanding (for 1st gen) upscaling hardware as well (to drive standard DVD's to 720p or 1080i).

720p looks better than 1080 p/i to me. 1080 kinda hurts my eyes. My 360 is always in 720p...I tried playing Halo 3 with 1080 p and i and I had to switch back within a few minutes.
