'Course, you're free to use absolutely any type for a Monotype challenge.

am i allowed to catch a buizel in flying monotype as long as i only use it to trade for a chatot?

Alright then, I say ya should use Dark types what with Halloween 'round the corner 'n whatnot. ... That, and ya've got an Umbreon as an avatar.

I'll give ya Honchkrow and Spiritomb, the latter of which I can provide for free over wi-fi if you have wireless internet access.

Aye, all that's covered within the rules in the second post on the first page. During a monotype, you can catch any Pokemon for "trade fodder", to use for HMs, so on and so forth. Just can't use them in battle once ya get your first flying type.
