You're thinking of updates. Free DLC would be akin to an update. The more common scenario for DLC is paying more for a game after you've purchased it. There's nothing good to come from it.

I WOULD have no problem with DLC, as to me the more characters the better, but...

I have absolutely zero confidence that they'll correctly balance a character that would come out AFTER the game's release.
