I just gave you my reasoning. -_-
The fact that they're the only viable Hoenn counterparts make them the best option in my opinion. Sableye itself is notable too.
They must have wanted a Gen 4 rep and a trainer first. And I'm not saying I can read the developers minds, I just like this option.

By Pokemon standards it's just a bit above average for that. No weaknesses, and the fact that it represents all three Hoenn games with its gems. Gen V also made it more famous at least among the more knowledgeable fanbase by giving it Prankster.
My logic is that since they're probably only going to introduce one new Pokemon character, you'd be filling two generations by making N with Sableye/Mawile/???. N could use Plusle and Minun, I guess, but they seem too notable to not be their own character, and variety is good, since they're basically the same Pokemon with a minor stat difference and different colors. If they want Hoenn and Unova reps, this is the way to go, imo.

What else is there that would work? Should N be using Blaziken/Deoxys/Zoroark? lolno. You can't just shove a bunch of really wanted characters into one slot like that.
Let's see, what Generation 3 Pokemon are notable, popular, and would work in Smash Bros?
-Deoxys
-Blaziken
-Gardevoir
-Plusle
-Minun
-Flygon
....and that's really it. Blaziken would be too awkward without the other Hoenn starters, Deoxys would be awkward being used by N too. Plusle and Minun I already explained, they're the same damn thing aside from color, and wouldn't be worth taking up two of N's 3 Pokemon slots. That leaves Flygon and Gardevoir, which are less likely then Sableye and Mawile because the two aren't related to each other in any way.
The way I see it is, since N can't get away with using the really popular and notable ones from Gen III, Sableye and Mawile are the best option. It's true that the main reason I'd like to see it is due to fanboyism, but it's not clouding my eyes, I'm being completely logical as well. It's unlikely, yeah, but what other way can Gen III and Gen V be represented if only one character is introduced? I'm not saying it's a huge deal that Gen III be represented, but this is the best way to incorporate it, imo.

.... Why would N be in the next smash? Why do they need to represent gen 3? Is lucario not a suitable representative? Why would they have any need to represent the less popular to that extent? Pikachu, pokemon trainer, and jigglypuff are all 1st gen, all popular, and all different, correct? That's 3 out of 4 reps from a single generation, yes? Why is more needed from other gens that are not as popular?
All these questions have developed a slight ache in my skull...
