Well, for some of us old farts thats just getting back into gaming after a 20 year break, the guide helps when stuck. I agree that SMG can be done without the guide, but it has helped me get back into the gaming mode.

My kids happily opened up a Nintendo Wii on Christmas 2007.
I haven't beat the game yet but I have just been using the guide as a reference. For some tips on fighting the bosses but haven't really used it that much. I prefer to try to figure the level out myself and if I'm really stuck I check the guide.
I have yet to use a guide for this game. I'm up to about 70 stars now.
i never use guides. they are like cheat codes, but worse.
Using guides is like cheating and that completely kills the fun. But a long time ago for Ocarina of Time I bought the guide just so I could know how to get into the Dark Temple, that was the only use.![]()

Spoiler Alert!
I used a guide, it keeps you on track but it does take away some fun away from the game.![]()

I haven't needed a guide and I have done the 120 stars with Mario and about 10 with Luigi. (Would have put in spoilers but one of the posters above would have already ruined it for you).
The challenging stars often require platforming dexterity and expertise as opposed to puzzle solving.

I used a guide twice.
Both for daredevil runs.
Neither of them helped me.![]()

This is the first game in a very long time where I did not use a guide until I collected 120 stars. You pretty much don't need one for this game, and that's rare by today's standards.
Just go to gamefaqs. There's nothing wrong looking for info. People have lives to live, and a game is for fun, not for work. Never forget that.
