Stuck on 5-4

I'm in the portrait room on 5-4, and I know what to do, matching the colors...but in the room where the block is supposed to be white, I can't hit the block. I tried grabbing the Crags with Thoreau, but I couldn't get high enough, not even with Bowser, and now from all the jumping and accidental collisions, my 2 Crags are gone. Did I mess up?

Just throw the Thoreau at it until it turns the white color. Climb the ladder and throw it at it.
