I was wondering if you can use the internet on the wii and play tennis or something else with another person using a wii somewhere else or if you can have a conversation with someone (Instant message, etc) .. Forgive my stupidity if this should be common sense

Nada, nada... well, not yet anyway. Give her some time. Nintendo is focusing on their online play but kind of have their plates fulls with doing other things with the Wii.
