VC Sonic question

K so i had Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega so i got it on VC and i have a question.

Wasnt there a way to "charge" sonic up so he rolls in a ball and shoots off or did that come later in Sonic 2? I cannot remember if it happend in Sonic 1. Im unable to get him to do it but im not sure if thats cause i forgot the controls or if he just cant do it yet.

any thoughts?

i noticed this as well when i bought the game. I checked the manual and it doesn't mention anything about the charge, it must have been added in sonic 2, but i could have swore that it was in 1 back in the day.

Yes, the spin dash was not implemented until the second Sonic game.
