    I ended up getting SMB2...I haven't played it on VC yet. Does anyone know if you can save your progress?

    The Wii pauses games for you. It doesnt save it but it will keep it paused even if you turn the Wii off.

    does that pausing automaticly happen lets say in a power outage or you have to manualy do it?

    You have to exit to Wii menu in order for this progress pause to take place. A power outage would most likely erase your progress in the same way as when playing any other game unfortunately.
