Regarding the death clock, are you referring to the Doomsday Clock? Well, it certainly doesn't refer to literal minutes, but you can read about it here:

The clock refers to the minutes left until midnight, A.K.A. doom of everything. Right now it's 5 minutes to midnight, and hasn't been this close since 1987, the year I was born. Naturally when I was born everyone started getting along
