Acceleration is usually the main feature of speed.
In physics, overall_speed = power:weight.
The lower the weight, the more the speed, the higher the power, the more the speed. High power, low weight = very fast.
Top speeds are the limitation of the differentials and the rev limit.
To calculate speed we have something called a drag track which is a quarter mile long. The time it takes the car to do the quarter mile is the ultimate measurement of speed. A cheap car might be limited in its top speed, but it might get there faster than a car with a really high top speed. And higher top speeds take longer to reach... this beats the whole "top speed is the measurement of how fast a car is". Top speed is really the measurement of how fast a car can get. 0-60MPH/0-100KM/h and 400M is the actual measurement of speed.
The Acura NSX has a amazing acceleration and relatively good top speed.
In fact..
Fact #25 - The 1991 Acura NSX 3.2L has 292bHP ... 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and 400M in 12.9 seconds. Stock. With a top speed of 270KM/h. ^.~ Aww yeah, fool.
