I would get a Jeep, but not the Patriot. They now have lifetime driveline warranties on new vehicles.

Ugh do not get a jeep a black yukon all the way...
There are tons of reasons I will list a few...
Better driving and handling...
Much better sound...
Much cooler 
Much nicer 
So much room but isnt an SUV...
Good gas mileage the one my friend got had like 28 to the gallon...
There are so many more reasons...

Damn, how come I never got here before? Anway, you're comparing two very different mid-sized SUVs, so that narrows it down to what you like. the Jeep Commander is more of an off-road vehicle where-as the Touareg is a mid-sized luxury SUV. Here are specs:
VW Touareg:

i don't want a large car... i want an SUV. if i'm going to put the money out, i want it to be something that i really want. i won't be going off road or anything, so really out the two i put up there the VW would be my best choice right now. i don't want a really big SUV, like an armada or escalade, because it's just too big. (plus i can't afford it)
i'm 21, about to graduate college, possibly start a family, i'm gonna be a coach... i imagine i'll need a somewhat large vehicle. NOT a minivan though. i'm too cool for that.

Haha, okay then....
I'd say jeep, just because the lifetime powertrain warranty seems like such a great deal. And although I'm asian, I still support the good ol' big three.
