DT - Thanks for the tips, I've been reasearching cameras a lot, I'm not very fussed on Nikons, we use some lovely Canon SLRs here in college and I can't get enough of them. I'm in love with the 400D lol =]
As for lense I haven't looked into them that much yet, top of my list is a fisheye lense, which is more expensive than the camera itself. ¬_¬
I'd probably get something like a EFS 18-55mm lens to start off with. Once I'm working full time from around May all my spare money will be going towards camera equipment such as a good bag (£100), tripod, lenses etc, etc.. so I'll be getting lots of them.

You can't go wrong with either [Canon or Nikon]. It's easy to fall into trivial dissection of features, functions, brand, etc. (I do it myself - I have an aversion to CF cards vs. SD cards ).
The Canon 17-85mm IS is a killer lens - decent walkaround as it gives you a decent amount of focal length. Yeah, when you starting getting into nice primes, you can spend a fortune, but there are some flexible zooms and super-zooms that get the job done for and reduce the amount of glass you have to carry around.
At the end of the day, it's not about the gear, but about the photographer.
