Well some sod recons that the Univrese will end in just over 4,999,999,993 years so no hurry to start anything http://www.orbit.zkm.de/?q=node/367
Yes it all ends with a crunch
Quote:
«Big Crunch Clock is a digital clock that counts backwards the five billion years that we have left before the sun explodes. The clock that I installed at the entrance to the Swiss pavilion is the large external format of a previous, much smaller version that I put to work at the end of '99. It has 20 numbers: from the billions of years to the tenths of a second, and it is designed to be able to function with solar energy - the same energy that will one day destroy it. The buyer will have to adapt it to future technology. A small gift for future generations... » ~ Gianni Motti.
At 10 o’clock, on the day the fifty-first edition of the Venice Biennale opens its doors to the public, the end of the world will be only 4,999,999,993 years, 202 days, 14 hours and a couple of seconds away. This is what the Big Crunch Clock tells us, a digital clock with a length of 500 cm, created by Gianni Motti for the Biennale Pavilion, which, with almost exaggerated precision, counts down towards the moment when, astrophysicists believe, the sun will explode. At precisely that instant, as opposed to the Big Bang which gave origin to the universe, all traces of Gianni Motti - the artist whose works consist not so much in creating objects but in the creation of stories and legends that become part of the real world through the most diverse channels - will disappear.
At the exact moment when the sun explodes, however, Gianni Motti will have succeeded in appropriating, thanks to his 20-digit timer, the culminating moment of the history of the solar system, transforming it into a work of art.
I wonder what will happen if the battrey runs out
Who else wants to go to where it is and put it back a day

Hahaha wow. It'll eventually blow up, once this solar system is of no use. It seems we as humans have almost used up our welcome here on earth already, so I think that clock should be sped up a little.

I plan to be living full time in my summer house in Andromeda Galaxy by that time anyways, nice young stars and some great beaches! So I'm not worried.
I figured in the next few million years this place will get old to me anyway, always the same old crap.
My place is the 223,456 spec on the right. I picked up some timeshare last year and hope to settle down there later.
December 21 2012 I'll be to drunk/high to remember the whole thing about 2012, lol.
On a lighter note, at least we won't see the sun explode.

Its solar powered, the batter can never run out, well until the clock reaches zero.
Agreed, i wanna set the time off a little.

Hahaha. Putting it back a day... SURPRISE!
It's stupid that this clock counts down seconds... There's almost no chance that he'll get it to the second.

I should point out here that the death of the Sun is not the same thing as the Big Crunch (the Universe can continue on without our inconspicuous little star), nor is it likely there will even be a Big Crunch, according to what we know about the Universe.
Oh yeah, I'd like to know how this guy managed to work out the exact time the Sun will "explode" (even though it won't).

He'd be lucky if it was accurate to within a few million years, let alone seconds.
