I had it revolving around the idea that many people here are 'different'. For example, there seems to be an unusually high number of bisexual people here. They aren't necessarily outcasts, they just prefer a less personal atmosphere (perhaps because they're trying to hide something). However, these 'differences' have made them more open-minded, turning them into a generally nicer and more accepting community.
Just make the thread, bitch.
On the bisexual thing, though:
I hadn't noticed, but now I realise that there are more bisexual people here than in society. However, I find that here I talk to many people who are in an older age bracket than myself. They're fully aware of themselves, and are generally more open. The only bisexual people I know have come out recently; I'm anticipating even more coming out soon. There are those people who you're pretty sure about, but they're not open, too.
Then again, it could be the fact that I live in a city with no gay culture. If you're gay in Australia, odds are you'll end up living in Sydney (not a dig).
To the older members: Can you offer any insight? When did you first notice people around you coming out?
I came out at 17, since that's the age I was finally allowed to date. Strict upbringing. I don't really like the phrase "come out" because it sounds so earthshattering, and pansexuality is arguably not earthshattering, it just means...personality > gender, I guess.
When I told my mom, this was the conversation. Irrelevant, but I'm sharing because it was fantastic.
Me: So listen, I got asked out tonight...I'm getting ready at 6.
Mom: Okay! Have fun, be careful, be home by 10. Wait...who is this guy?
Me: It's...not...a guy....
Mom: What? Oh. OHHHHHH. Oookay! Have fun, be careful, be home by 10.
In the same year, 3 of my friends revealed their fabulous ~alternative~ lifestyles as well. So I guess 17-18 was a common time. I find some people wait until they're old enough or nearly old enough to move out incase their parents decide to disown them (which happened to one of my old friends, he ended up on the streets, wouldn't accept help from anyone...he's dead now).
I think people are more open online. There's no reason you wouldn't reveal your sexuality. It's way easier to laugh at the "BURN IN THE FIERY PITS OF HELL" crowd online than it is in person where they can kick the living shit out of you and steal your wallet.

Wow, thanks for sharing. You're lucky to have a mum like that. It's interesting that three of your friends all came out in the same year. That's kinda similar to me, because I have a group of four close friends who all came out to me on the same day.
You're absolutely right about the physical aspect of it. Better a PM than a black eye, right?
I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. If you don't mind me asking, how did his parents react to his death?

Definitely better a PM than a black eye, haha.
As for my friend, I don't know how his parents reacted. This was back home so I don't have a lot of details. He didn't wait until he was old enough to be on his own. He came out to his parents when he was 15 and was kicked out the same day. I only found out a few months ago that he was dead. Nothing is stranger than finding out your old friends are dead...on Facebook.
Woah, four friends came out to you on the same day? That must've been a long day D:

Facebook? Dayumm...
To be fair, I had my suspections of one or two of them. I didn't really have the opportunity to be shocked; it was more me trying to convince them that I was fine with it (which I am). They're still the same people, so I don't see what the problem was.
I'm proud of my bi friends. They haven't all come out to society yet, but it takes a heap of courage to admit it even to yourself.
It is good to have people around that are so open and honest, kudos to you celeste.
It is a known fact that I have two bi friends (and one gay, which I only discovered a few weeks ago) who are close, when the bi friends admitted their sexuality i first thought it was really quirky. But now i have grown to accept and understand their interests and really it does not play any part in our friendships. (though i do try to avoid conversations that contain sex >.>)
If only more adelaidians/melbournians/canberrainians were understanding (In perth and hobart it doesn't matter at all ) It does bother me when people are abused on their sexuality and everyone else thinks that is 'ok'

I don't think homophobia is confined to those cities, but you're right.
