Haha, but when you're happy you're smiling throughout the day. That said, its still a difficult question. Money can definitely make life easier, but I'd still go with poor and happy.

You'd have to define "poor" and "rich", as they can change drastically depending on the perspective.

I just talked to my mom, who is rich and miserable, and she said she'd rather be poor and happy, which she was at one point. So with that perspective, I'd choose poor and happy. Right now I'm...a student (who is sometimes spoiled, sometimes completely broke due to "responsibility lessons") and miserable.
...I have $18 to my name right now, hahah, so I'm poor and miserable D:

That's an outstanding point. I've been curious to see how people answer this - I'd also be curious if people have experienced both situations (I guess in the context of how poor and rich are defined - it's easy not to have any perspective).

I know quite a few people will say happiness is all they need, but I'd say a roof over your head and a few meals don't hurt

I'll say this: I've known folks who were happy and sad and wealthy and poor (pick your combo)

If you are poor you are never truly happy (I know first hand) because in the back of your mind you always are stressing over how to pay next months bills. Or how to get braces on your children.
It doesn't take a lot to make a poor person happy but it does to make a rich person happy.

I've been pretty well off my entire life. My father is a doctor. when I was young we visited family overseas and traveled a lot. I've seen my share of poverty. I feel like friends have always treated me differently cause they saw me as rich though. I'm really sensitive about that I don't know why.

Well i havent been in both situations but i've been close to rich, when my grandfather past away he left me a nice chunk of change, but i was to foolish at the at of 21 so i blew it, went on trips around the world and a few shopping sprees. and now im not poor, i would say im middle class, but to me money is everything. if i could go back with that money i had and invest it correctly and build off it, i know i would be in a much happier state then i am right now. right now its hard comin up with money for an engagement ring and basically my future.

I've experienced both ends and even though none of the responsibilities lies with me, it's always horrible seeing parents so stressed out due to money issues.

I agree with SSBB and that you'd have to define rich and poor, but I'd always choose my family and I to be 'rich' enough to have a decent life and not worry about bills and that, rather than a struggling one.

Personally, though.. I'd love to be filthy rich. Having money makes me very very happy. But hey.. I'm a student.

I haven't had a rich life but I am very happy when I get the chance to spend time with my family. Like last week me and my sisters planned a camping trip for my moms birthday. We all took it off work and had a great time. Cost about 200-300$ to go down to the states but only cuz of gas and 150 for cabins. Most of the time we spent in the cabin watching movies, playing Scrabble or sitting in the hot tub. That camping trip was the happiest my family has been since Christmas.

What I am trying to say is that you don't need money to be happy. I was happy playing a game of Scrabble.

I suppose you could opt to be rich, than if you weren't happy enough, just give all the money away to various charities and become poor.

A couple of points about diminishing returns with wealth:

You hit some point where it takes a +huge+ increase to get to the next level - wealth has plateaus - there is very little difference in $3M and $5M, but there's a big difference in $5M vs. $50M vs. $500M

Also as you scale up in revenue, unless you do hit those big milestones, additional money doesn't effect your lifestyle all that much. You sort of get saturated with the things that money can buy (especially within those plateau areas) and you start getting much more satisfied with things that cost very little.

OK here's one:

Aliens come down and offer to take you with them to experience the wonders of the universe - the problem is, you will never have contact with the earth again (so no contact with family/friends). Do you go? What if you could take one extra person? Or your immediate family?

That doesn't make sense. How can you be rich and miserable at the same time?

If you don't have love, you can buy a wife from Cambodia!
