generally, i like to think i have good grammar. i was horrible when it came to english until about year eight, when i had a wonderful teacher named mr. whitehouse. inspiration overload. now i'm considered an intelligent, sophisticated writer.

furthermore, i have an interest in typography so i know th nitty gritty of what symbols are right where, et cetera. that is also why i don't us uppercase letters very often... on an aesthetic level, i don't like them. on a practical level, i see them as unnecessary.

one thing i'm shocking at is spelling.

"i" is not a word.

"I" is.

Proper nouns are capitalized, as are the beginnings of sentences and acronyms. That's the way English works, and that's how our brains are trained to read. If you make up your own rules, you're not following English spelling and grammar, sorry.

1:Society, as a whole, will find it in their best interest to start using proper grammar even when using electronic forms of communication. The longer we let this go on the more we're loosing a grasp of the language.

2:However, I think it is cool to use slang on the internet. Besides, the internet spawns all sorts of memes like "SHOOP DA WOOP!!"

3: Sometimes, people will hit a wrong keystroke and tyep a word incorrectly, or simply mix teh letters up. It's not the end of the world is there is a typo, just try to proof read. For all you know the person can suffer from Dyslexia

4: But then there are people that just don't know how to spell some words. This is a ridiculous reason considering all the online dictionaries and the built-in spell check of Fire Fox.
Ridiculous is a big offender. I always see it as "Rediculous"

5: One thing I find very annoying is people not knowing the difference between "to", "too" and "two." "Your" and "you're" are bad ones too. Also, noun-verb agreement is just ridiculous to get wrong. That's basic stuff, people.

It's not that I'm particularly picky about all these things. If it's a quick, casual post I'm not going to mind using slang or the miss use of a coma. But if it's a longer post, maybe an argument of some kind, that you're trying to make a point then be literate. If you can't clearly, and properly, communicate your opinions I'm not going to take them seriously.

It's like the difference between casually chatting with you buddies, and talking with your professors, or giving a speech.

For the younger crowd: When you get out into the real world you're going to need to be an effective communicator. If you email your professors or boss saying something like "omg lyke I'm sooooo srry about missing class, is there somewhere i can get da notes lol :-)" they will probably laugh at you.......a lot.

The fact that students are handing in papers with "u" and "ur" and "cuz" and such is a sign of how bad the problem is.

Even if you know better, and are doing it just to save an extra 0.1 seconds of typing time, you're contributing to the problem by reinforcing it in the minds of young impressionable readers that this sort of language is "ok" and "acceptable". It is not, so stop making things worse. It's being handed down from people who say they know better, into a new generation that now honestly doesn't know any better.

in english it's not as big an issue as it would be in, say, german. the lack of capitalisation doesn't make it any harder to read, in my opinion. when i need to i use the full conventions of the english language, including capitalization. but it's just that, it's a convention. it's not a legibility issue. it has nothing to do with understanding what i've typed. i have to say you're a bit of an anal retentive obsessive prick if you can't understand 'i' against 'I'.

most intelligent posters on this forum consider my posts legible and enjoy reading them. they're the only people i'm concerned with getting my message across to.

Seriously guys, get over yourselves. The only reason this thread exploded is because Grammar Nazis are elitists and trolls. Elitists enjoy shoving sh!t in peoples faces about how much better they are then those who use improper grammar. Trolls love starting fights, and it seems that is what a select few of you (quoted) look like your trying to do.

What are you trying to accomplish here? Creating a thread on an internet forum about grammar is no way to rid the world of idiocy. There will always be those who use U instead of you or use a lowercase I instead of a capitalized one. There is nothing you can do about it. Stop trying to change the internet, and the world for that matter, with your meaningless little corrections on obviously legible posts.
