Do video games promote violence, Yes or No. I'm doing a persuasive paper for school and i need your opinion. all though im an avid gamer, i dont know which side to choose. tell me what ya think, and try and use facts to support your side if you can
If the person is really messed up then maybe they might do something violent they see from a video game, but I think that video games alone are not the cause for violence. I remember a story about a Japanese boy who stabbed 9 people in a shopping centre, and the media jumped on the fact that a year earlier he had entered into a Street Fighter tournament, and said that the game tought him the weak spots of his victims -.-

In a way yes because it does expose you to violent acts when you are playing one. but then again, you can say that for all entertainment mediums like movies and books. i think the more important question to answer in your paper is whether violent video games lead you to commit violent acts and the answer to that i think is similar to what Happy said. There are so many other factors that push people to violence like his/her upbringing, environment, and the person's emotional and mental state.
Not violence but bad language, i hate bad language in games because it lets kids think that cussing up a storm is "cool" But take Gears of war for example. There is a reason why it is rated "M" so i dont get it when parents buy it for there 14 year old and then say billy why are you acting so violent?
lol

No. The only way the a game can even increase the amount of violence in a person is if they are screwed up. In fact, first person shooters sooth me, due to the fact that I can take out all my stresses in a headshot.
A side note, none ever blames the people who gave these murderers the guns in the first place....

It promotes just as much violence as T.V. In other words, there is no yes or no answer to this question (spurious relationship). If anything, your question is a little bit too broad; it needs to be narrowed down a bit. e.g. do violent video games increase the overall crime rate in (area)?
I assume this is for a high school paper. If I were you, I would choose another topic because it is a difficult topic to argue (unless you were to support both sides). Definitely something you couldn't cover in 6 pages.
they do make some people more violent because when playing it can get peoples adrenaline going which leads to that person being more aggressive. however only someone who is already messed up will actually go out and shoot up a shopping mall/school

Fantastic response.
So let's assume that people aren't born with any predisposition for violence - then people who commit violent acts do so as a result of sociological drivers (minus the few with physio/psycho-logical issues). It's created by environment: culture, social interaction, group dynamics, etc.
So if a person has propensity towards violence (assuming again, no inherent "evil"), and videogames (along with TV, magazines, the internet, movies, etc.) are part of our culture, can we say they don't contribute? I definitely think some VG's are a part of an aggregate desensitization (combined with the aforementioned).
Good topic!

I don't really think they promote violence. I think that they just give kids with violent minds different ideas on how to execute their inevitable acts of violence.

A place they call utopia, a place within the mind
If anything depicts violence in any way it is promoting it. Promoting doesn't necessarily mean that it will cause a person to become violent. The word promoting as you used it in the question asks if the game is advertising it. Which they do.
A video game could have some effect on a person, maybe to the extent of actually hurting someone, but there are alot of other factors to look at. How is this child raised? Is the child bullied? Has some truamatizing event happened recently in the child's life? and so on and so forth. Bottemline of my opinion is that: Video games do not cause violence by themselves, but other outside affecting factors may help lead to the violence seen in a video game.
