Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst

I'm not sure if anyone here ever played it, but Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast was my big introduction to the world of online gaming. Back then I was dialing in with the Dreamcast's 56K modem and playing all hours of the night (literally a lot of the time).

Well, I was browsing around this weekend and checking things out, and I found out that even though Sega pulled support for the PC game earlier this year (the console versions have been out of commission for a while), the games are still playable thanks to fans making private servers available. The best thing is that, unlike every version since the original Dreamcast version, it's absolutely free.

While the client for the PC version (Blue Burst, which has content exclusive from the console versions) is no longer available from Sega, I did find one optimized for the private server available thanks to MegaUpload.

For more information, check out the SCHTHACK site (the server). You can even play the console versions (Dreamcast & Gamecube, but not the original XBOX) on the server with a little bit of effort. Good stuff. I just got done playing a bit, and it was a welcome trip down memory lane, at least for me.

Yeah, apparently quite a few people playing are digging up their old saves to give PSO another whirl.

It will work on the Dreamcast, but it seems to be a bit tricker to pull off than the other versions. Basically, if you have the broadband adapter, all you have to do is change one thing in the browser settings, and you're ready to go. Unfortunately, most people don't have the broadband adapter, and it goes for a pretty penny on eBay. Connecting via the dial-up modem is also possible, but it requires you to use a codebreaker CD to enter a code to open up the option. All the information about connecting with all options is available on the SCHTHACK site.

The easiest thing to do for most users is to download the PC version (Blue Burst) and go with that, although if you want to use old characters, that's not so great an option. I'm going to try it on my Gamecube once I get the ok from them on my account, and I might try the Dreamcast as well if I can find the right code breaker CD.

Eh, I'm pretty sure anything even a few years old will run it. As long as it's Direct3D compatible, you should be fine.
