Video to DVD?

I've pretty much grown up with a computer, but when it comes to putting videos on DVD, I can't tell you how many blank discs I've wasted.

Basically, I've been wanting a simple "freeware" program that can put AVI files to a blank DVD disc. I've tried out two different programs so far:
- Starburn, this program ends up putting them as a CD rom; and only plays clips of the videos, not the whole thing.

- Free Movies to DVD, this one seems to work fine at first, but it takes over 4 hours to do it. And when it plays, the sound is fuzzy and the quality is plain terrible.

I also have Imageburn. So if someone knows a program that can at least turn my files into an ISO file, that would help also.
Post here if you know any solution for this, Thanks.

I can only presume your using a PC running some variant of windows.
In which case i can't help you much, but it will certainly take a while to encode. More than likely you won't be able to burn your .avi file onto the dvd so that it plays in a dvd player. so a program would first encode the video to a different format, then burn it.

Ok so i found a list of software for windows that will do it;
Alcohol 120%
Ashampoo Burning Studio
AVS Video Converter
Blindwrite
CDRWIN
CloneCD
CloneDVD
CyberLink Power2Go
DeepBurner
DiscJuggler
Droppix Recorder
DvdFab
Easy CD-DA Extractor
Easy CD Creator (Now obsolete)
Easy Media Creator
Express Burn Plus
GEAR Video
Nero Burning ROM
NTI CD and DVD-Maker
ONES by Prassi
PowerISO
Roxio WinOnCD
Sateira CD&DVD Burner
Ulead DVD software
UltraISO

but you will have to pay for them.

If you're going to author a standard DVD (vs. just dropping video data files on a DVD) you're going to need to convert any video into DVD compliant MPEG-2 files (YUV 4:2:0, specific resolution, etc.)

Then you're going to need an authoring tool to handle creation of control files, scripts, menus, etc. There are couple of good apps that are commercial - Nero Vision (part of Nero 8) and Ulead DVD Factory (2 flavors, regular and pro). Those apps have provision to handle capture, conversion, authoring and burning (basically everything in one app).

This freeware app - DVDStyler:

http://www.dvdstyler.de/

Is actually pretty good (it's an opensource port), but it doesn't handle MPEG-2 conversion. MPEG-2 requires a royalty payment so you usually don't see that in freeware media conversion apps (it's usually a pay CODEC "add in").

FYI, this is probably the best site on the web for video information:
