I hate it when words are misspelled over such a long period of time that people accept as them being the norm....ie colour, laser, criticise

Those are not misspellings those are English words and then the Americans have their own variations. If anything the American spelling is wrong since they came from the English words.

But yeah, they're accepted as correct because they are both correct. It appalls me you've never known that's what they use across the pond.
