Fact is, America IS a racist society. Granted, Obama being a presidential candidate is big push forward, but remember it was only 40 years ago that segregation was in place, only 60 years ago you arrested thousands of Japanese and German Americans, and only now that many people who are STILL misinformed are quite happy to pin 9/11, the war in Iraq, and every terrorist act ever on Obama and 'his kind'.

It's not controlled by racism and if you ever lived here you can see it plainly even over the last 10 years. At best maybe 10% of americans are racist even fewer are open about it because of how society looks on it in todays age. My generation and any after me have little to no racisim at all most don't even understand it.

Obama already has the majority of voters in the current poll's, and not all of them are democrat thats for sure. The good news for him is for some odd reason "lol" racist are usually very right wing conservatives and always vote republican so it's not like he will loose any votes for it beyond that they are a small minority of that party.

For the most part the country is 45% democrat 45% republican and 10 % on the fence about it that in the end decide elections. Very few of that 10% will care about what the presidents race is they will simply care about the one able to fix the hole this country is in.

It's not a racist society...it's a society with racists in it. You cannot judge an entire government, race, religious group etc by any one denominator (heck, often times you can't even say everyone here is American as many are here illegally O_o) and the fact of the matter is, the majority of Americans today are not racist...but we are haunted by the past as many are still racist today and bring those racial issues prominently forward as they teach their children and grandchildren these insane beliefs.

Eh, I could rant for days, but the factor that we both agree on is that Obama being elected is proof of the country taking a step forward and I, for one, hope that he will be able to nullify (or at least shrink) many of the problems we are faced with at present if he is elected.

Actually, most of the racism in society (and yes there is, just read some black theorists such as Franz Fannon) is actually normalised (hence why we have some people denying there's any at all).

American society and it's government are two seperate things. However, the American society surely has to be accountable for the government (in a so-called democratic system) in the first place. And if American society isn't responsible for the government, then it's not a democratic system in the first place (which I would argue would be the case anyway - especially with accusation and denial of Bush stealing both the 2000 and the 2004 elections).

Not saying the UK is much better, but then I dislike the amount of racism here too. I, as a person, cannot solely change the state of the country, but British society is responsible for either voting the current party into power, or neglecting to do anything about it, and are therefore responsible. It's a societal responsibility rather than a personal one though.

You misunderstand me; society itself is not racist. If we had slaves, or if we widely accepted that whites are better than other races, or if we did any number of other things as a whole, then we'd be racist. I am NOT denying that there is racism WITHIN our society, I am saying the majority of our people are NOT racist, and therefore you can not label our entire society as racist.

I will not pretend to know what the racial situation is overseas, however I find it interesting that you think you know what ours is despite not living here...don't believe everything the media tells you.

Trust me, everything I ever post on here is from empirical observation as opposed to being fed from the media.

Well that's good, but it's still not quite the same over here as you have said...or at least not where I live. Perhaps you've been observing Louisiana where the situation is the worst?

no, america is racist still, its just back door racism. we might not show racism, but the idea of a black person for president can scare a lot of people. remember, the general population of ages 30-60 grew up with their parents being racist, so through their paradime they still have that negativeness towards black people. but thats just black people, the fact that hes MUSLIM scares even more people.

Makes me feel sorry for those 2nd generation Japanese-Americans that are trying to get into politics.

It's quite bad that the first thing (and sometimes only thing) that people think when they hear the term racism is African Americans. Fact of the matter is that racism happens from every culture/ethnicity to every culture/ethnicity.

I doubt a lot of voters know he's part Muslim. But, I do agree with racism as a whole being a minor factor here. Living in the suburbs right outside of Atlanta, needless to say, I encounter a lot of racist people (which is understandable, mind you [in the case of older folk]). As has already been said though, an enormous percentage of racists are conservative/republican anyway, so it doesn't matter too much in the big scheme of things.

A much bigger group (and perhaps the biggest) to be considered is women voters. I believe Obama will pull in the majority of them though and ultimately claim presidency.

its an american mindset, since we all learn about it in school so we instantly connect racism to african americans.

Lol oh my god guys, ok news flash Obama is not muslim, you can not simply be part muslim. Muslim is a religion not a race and he has been a devout Christain for many many years.

Some of you need to stop getting your news from the "Right Wing Times" and acctually go and learn the truth.

This will probably pop up more and more as the election draws nearer, it doesn't have to be true but its a scare tactic to get a vote. For some reason alot of missinformed americans associate Islamic, or muslim with terrorist whenever they hear it, and therefore are scared when anything of eaither is mentioned.

Scare tacticts are common from the Republican party, Bush did the same thing last election saying terrorism was up and he was the only president able to combat it scaring the fence voters into voting for him.

As for your racist because you parents are, thats partly true, but again with society being so agenst racism today children only learn about it behind closed doors if at all. It's not like a hundred years ago where racism was open and you brought your kid along with you to klan meetings.
The number of racist in the country has and still is dropping dramatically, if Obama gets elected it would just be one closer step to eliminating it all together. Thats almost a good enough reason to vote for him in the first place, beyond the fact he's a better candidate with an IQ not comparable to Bush..lol

I'm really suprised the Repulican party couldn't find us anyone better than McCain. Personally I don't think he has a chance hes is far to much like Bush and peopel are just fed up with the Right Wing Mindset. They needed a candidate more moderate to get a guaranteed win thats for sure

I'd vote McCain because if he's elected, the situation in Iraq would stay stable...I'm not saying I support what is going on overseas but if Obama is elected..I think that things would change much too dramatically. McCain isn't much better than Bush, at all but at least things'll stay stable.

Forgive me for not reading the 9 pages worth of opinions..If what I have said has already been brought up, glad someone shares my opinions.

I'm not muslim, but my question is what would be so wrong with him being a muslim if he was?
