You are a surgeon, in the ER.
It's the dead of night, your low on staff, and everyone is tired.
You recieve 2 critically mortally injured patients into your ER, at the same time.
They were both invovled in a vehicular accident.
The FIRST victim to come in is an homeless man, early 50's, no family or loved ones,
and is a drunkard, who lives on asking people for money, and drugs.
The SECOND victim to be brought in is an business man, early 30's, family man with 2 young children, and is very religious, and so far has been has not had a criminal history.
You read the reports, and background checks of both victims.
You have less than an hour to save one of them.
But there is a medical rule; first come, first serve basis order.
Meaning that whoever shows up first to the operating room,
is always the first one to be operated on.
That is a WORLDWIDE rule of law on the OR.
If you follow this rule, the family man will die.....on the table.
So, the clock is ticking.......
Do you follow the proper procedure, and operate on the first patient; the homless man.
Or do you risk losing your medical license, and being sued for malpractice by operating on
the family man.
In the ER, you don't take time to read background checks, you find out what's wrong, and you fix it. That being said, "first come, first serve" means "first come, first serve"

Aside from the fact that reading background checks while they're dying would be a complete waste of time, I would treat whoever came in first. Doctors are not supposed to discriminate between patients.

You got it, as much as you might like to save the guy with the kids, you have to treat whoever came in first.
I would've used the time you wasted reading background checks to save both of them.

If I was a surgeon I would just sit back and do nothing. You know why?? BECAUSE SURGEONS DON'T MAKE THE CALL!! The physicians in the ER would look at the patients and from there the physicians would diagnose the patient and tell the surgeon what surgery is needed. Surgeons only do surgeries mainly they don't do medicine or other stuff.
what would make the choice more difficult is if the homeless man was tring to kill himself in the first place. so save the man who is homeless, drug addict, ect. who wanted to die anyways or save the family man?
