Does anyone else feel Beijing was a bad choice for the Olympics? I really dont understnad why the IOC chose China to host the 2008 Olympics.
The air pollution is incredibly bad to the point it is 5 times the level of what the World Health Organization (WHO) rules as safe. The weather is suppose to rain every day and China is actually planning on shooting missiles into the atmosphere to try to help stop thunderstorms. Someone tell me this is not a disaster waiting to happen. There is also the whole human rights issues and lack of it. There is a great deal of racism as most people in that part of China have great hate of Africans and anyone black.
We have these issues in other places but not to the extent that there is in China. I just feel that the IOC should have told Beijing to improve its air qualiry and human rights and we will talk later.
I am not big on watching the summer olyimpics (prefer Winter) but there should be interesting stories coming out of this.
Also, this year the American Baseketball team should dominate once again but we will have to wait and see.
It isn't a good place because of the high pollution. Also the human rights thing there is still a bit well, off.

I don't see why we should bar China from the olympics based on past actions.Sure, they've done some pretty terrible things, but every country has had its share of ups and downs. As for the pollution, China has made some improvements preparing for the olympics, and have even gone far enough to stop traffic in the city all the way. As for racism, you can't control people's beliefs.

The point of the Olympics is to bring different peoples together. I'd say that's a perfectly just reason not to hold the Olympics in a particular country.

It's not like the racists should ruin it for everyone else. If the racists try to pull anything, police will arrest them.

No one ever barred China. The fact is you have to earn the right to host the Olympics. I think there are a lot of places that are more worthy.
I have no idea why the IOC chose China or how the process works. I know China wanted the Olympics that went to Sydney because of Human Rights Concerns. Really nothing has changed since they were last denied and then 2001 when they were awared the 2008 Olympics.
Also, China has not been able to make a dent in the pollution issue which is really bad for aheletes competing.

They shut down the plants for the few weeks the Olympics are gonna be there for. They've been running as usual and just stopped yesterday. China didn't try too hard for the pollution aspect, just take a look at Beijing in mid day the smog is so thick you can't see down the next block. To think that the marathoners are going to run through that... Plus I read a report about a local marathon that was being run in Beijing around the beginning of May or so, several of the runners had to drop out from respiratory problems and they had strange irritations on their skin and faces.

Well, Eric Rudolph got away with it when he bombed the olympics in Atlanta in '96. They arrested him afterwards, but he still did what he set out to do.

The air pollution is terrible. . . and for that reason alone I think it's a really bad idea.
As for the other issues, well this is the Olympics not the "Which Country is the Most Fair" competition. It's not like countries like America don't violate human rights. With all the torturing, eavesdropping, and imprisoning people without public trials and stuff. China is pretty bad concerning some things though. . .

I'm watching the pre game show, and you can barely see the "Bird Nest" in the background due to all the pollution. I think the chinese have a good shot at winning a lot because they're used to the smog.

I doubt they could hit a ping-pong ball due to all the vision impairing smog.

I think Beijing was a good choice - not many countries have the fundings (apparently only 10) to pull of such a huge opening cermemony and I'm sure the Chinese will keep up the theme of harmony for the rest of the games and everthing will run smoothy. Any other Brit worried about how the U.K. will manage to even come close to topping a ceremony like that? Our national pride is fish 'n' chips. They'll probably try to flaunt the kilt and bagpipes but I see no way they'll be able to compete with the Chinese as hosts.

PAST actions? Tibet, anyone? What about the great number of people who go "missing" when they speak out against the government? How about all the people who were EVICTED WITHOUT COMPENSATION FROM THEIR HOMES to make space for the Olympic stadiums?

I heard that the pollution in Beijing is six times as bad as in London, and London ain't that great, either.
The pollution in Beijing is fifteen times worse than it is where I live. I can't imagine competing in that.

Don't be ignorant. Just because it's pretty doesn't mean it's okay.

Ah yes, fundings they deny of the people they evict from their homes. There are many homeless people living on the street because their homes were possessed by the Chinese governments. These families lost their homes without compensation.
I wonder how much money other countries would have if they didn't waste it on silly things like their people's wellbeing.

I'm getting frustrated at all these people ragging on about pollution. Do you guys have any idea on the population in the small area of Beijing!? There are a huge number of people per square km for gods sake. You can't blame them to much. That smog is the coal we send them so our Economy can prosper Dave.
