Possibly because of the servers, keep trying. if not give it a while.
just to let everyone know, you don't need to say what your miis name is, all you need is a friend code and the game lets you away with the code. Then i scans for your friend and displays the name

Mine is giving that disconnected error now..... 
Ah well. Gives me time to practice I suppose. Only won 2 out of 6 matches so far. Jumped straight into multiplayer.

Go outside and play instead of waiting for a server to work.
