do you you need wiiconnect24 to play online?

the title says it on. do you need wiiconnect24 to play online, or can you just play with the internet on without wiiconnect24

If you have a fast Internet connection, then you can automatically play online with certain games which support online functionality. Leaving your Wii on WiiConnect24 mode is optional, so it is really up to you.
