The Sequel to the launch title
The beach side sequel of the beloved Wii Sports hit the shelves with a positive bang in July. It allowed Wii owners to try out even more sports such basketball and wake boarding from the comfort of their own home.
However what other ideas came into the designer’s heads during the early drawing board stages?
“We considered fishing and a water slide activity before deciding on the final twelve events,” Katsuya Eguchi, the producer of the game said. Which gives the image quite vividly to myself of controlling the cheerful fellow in the ever British ‘Barclaycard’ advert – arguably perfection in game form. The fishing I’d imagine to be a Mii interpretation of Big Catch: Bass Fishing (Hooked! Real Motion Fishing), where the use of the Nunchuck is used to reel in the prey. Hooked! received mostly negative reviews, maybe this affected Mr. Eguchi’s decision to include fishing.
Katsuya went on to say, “As for more unconventional concepts, we created a pretty fun prototype of Kendama, a traditional Japanese toy that just didn’t fit the game’s theme.”
Kendama being a ‘simple’ cup-in-ball type game with an added spike for good measure, with quite a obscure name to the world outside of Japan. That alone gives a large enough impression as to why they weren’t too enthusiastic to include this in his latestgame – though from his comment, he seemed to enjoy it.
With the variety of games on offer to keep your Wii Sports hearts pumping, I’m sure other unmentioned ideas must have ran through the hemispheres of both Eguchi’s and fellow employees brains to fit in such a wide optioned title such as Wii Sports.
But what games would you like to have seen? Would you happily tape a Wiimote to your leg to play some Football (soc..cer?) or even play a Nunchuck implemented horse game, giving you the ability to race around a track and gather up some betting odds. Feel free to tell us your ideas on what you would have loved to have seen.
