Mario Kart 4 Player?

I was just reading an article about Party games where it states that Mario Kart on the Snes (it says Nes) was 2 player but become 4 player with a multitap. Is this true or has the mag made 2 mistakes in one line?

first mario kart I remember being 4 player was the 64 version, and I don't recall any game at all that was 4 player for the snes

Super Bomber Man and Street Racer we're definately 4 player on the Snes. Can't remember if Micro Machines was but it was on the Megadrive.

Do you mean originally or for the wii? perhaps the wii version has been made 4 player? I dont know, never played the game im afraid. Could be interesting though
