How do you put the wii on standby?

Press the power button and the LED will turn orange. It will now be in WiiConnect24/Standby mode (as long as you have a wireless connection).

If you do not have some sort of an Internet connection directed towards the Wii, then the LED will not turn orange even if you press the power button.

Why would you want to activate standbye mode if you didn't have an internet connection?
